Gifts of the Holy Spirit Lesson 7

Working of Power:

Definition: Supernatural, Holy Spirit given intervention into the natural with supernatural natural acts of healing, expelling demons etc.

And when the sabbath day came, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands?   Mark 6:2 (KJV)

But ye shall receive power, after that, the Holy Ghost comes upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.   Acts 1:8 (KJV)

NOTE: The word “power” here refers to the help or aid which the Holy Spirit would grant; the power of speaking with new tongues; of preaching the gospel with great effect; of enduring great trials, etc.

`Ac 19:11 (KJV) And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:   12 So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.   Acts 19:11-12 (KJV)

NOTE: Special miracles – Miracles that were remarkable; that were not common, or that were very unusual ( ou tas tuchon). When arguments and persuasions only harden men in unbelief and blasphemy, we must separate ourselves and others from such unholy company. God was pleased to confirm the teaching of these holy men of old, that if their hearers believed them not, they might believe the works.

Laying  on of hands get rid of evil spirits, if one has the gift of workings of power:

Also, Works of Power comes by hearing of faith.

He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Galatians 3:5 (KJV)

Now the God of hope fills you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. Romans 15:13 (KJV)

18- Warning! You Must Test the Spirit:

Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord but by the Holy Ghost. 1 Corinthians 12:3 (KJV)

And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. 33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. 1 Corinthians 14:32-33 (KJV)

1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God:
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

1 John 4:1-6 (KJV)

19- A Christian and the Gifts:

For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established; Romans 1:11 (KJV)

NOTE: Some spiritual gift – This probably means some of the extraordinary gifts of the Holy Spirit, which, being given to them, might tend greatly to establish their faith in the Gospel of Christ; and it is very likely that such gifts were only conferred by means of apostles; and as the apostle had not yet been at Rome, consequently the Roman Christians had not yet received any of these miraculous gifts, and thus they differed widely from all the other Churches which had been raised by the apostle’s ministry.

Ye may be established – That is, that they might be “confirmed” in the truths of the gospel. This was one design of the ministry, that Christians may be established, or strengthened, Eph_4:13. It is not to have dominion ever their faith, but to be “helpers of their joy,” 2Co_1:24. Paul did not doubt that this part of his office might be fulfilled among the Romans, and he was desirous there also of making full proof of his ministry. His wish was to preach not simply where he must, but where he might. This is the nature of this work.

Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. 2 Timothy 1:6 (KJV)

1.      Timothy’s gift could be neglected

2.     He must fan the flame of the gift

3.     He received a gift by the laying on of Paul’s hands

4.     He received a gift by the laying on of the elder’s hands

Holy Spirit baptism is required to fully function in your gift.

John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: 17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his floor and will gather the wheat into his garner, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable. Luke 3:16-17 (KJV)

Faith, Hope, Love are the basis for spiritual gifts. 1 Cor: 13

We must have faith to please God. Heb 11:6

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Hebrews 11:6 (KJV)

We must “love your neighbor as yourself” Mat 5:43; MK 12: 31; Ro 13:9; Gal 5:14. JS 2:8
