“9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.” Ps 19:9-10
We make most of our choices and affections with what I like to call an “agenda” in mind. We consider employment based on what is in it for me. Not just, “will I get paid and how much?” We also want to know if we will receive benefits, vacation days, and sick days. Our next question is “when is break time?”
We enter into many relationships because of what is in it for me. How can I get ahead because of this relationship? To whom can they connect me? Will I look good on his arm or with her on my arm? If I “scratch their back”, will they have enough “finger-nails” to “scratch” mine.
Another word for “fear” is “reverence.” You cannot show true reverence, respect if you motivation is selfishness. It is impossible to worship when you are worried about how you are going to get ahead because of whom you are worshipping.
The Psalmist said the fear, reverence, respect or worship we give to God is clean. There are no ulterior motives. It comes from a heart and life that has one thing in mind and that is its affection toward God.
This is something that should be our greatest desire. It is better than gold or honey! We should be careful nothing comes between us and true, clean, pure worship. Top Priority!
