Trust is hard for me, as most humans, we have all faced betrayal many times from the people we love or have loved. Betrayal usually does not kill you, yet when the act of betrayal comes, it is blinding flash, of gut, wrenching, extreme nausea, sometimes life altering, that can stop you in your tracks, and when you recover from the shock you check to see if you are still breathing, your chest is heaving and your sides hurt immensely, sobs rack your body and you feel so despondent and all the questions hit your mind at once, and sadly but slowly it forever changes who you are as a person, in that you are consistently changing your persona, to cover up the damage the act of betrayal left in its wake. Who or what was responsible for the betrayal?
I have often wondered how another person can be so calculatingly cold and deceitful, in their knowledge, to know their act of betrayal will have lasting consequences, and still commit the act forever damaging another human being. Where is their compassion, their love, their mercy, and how do they sweep all emotion to the side? What makes them into the betrayer?
These three typically go hand in hand with trust, betrayal and the pits. According to a very famous minister, if you have had more than five pits in your life, you are not learning, you are just recreating, the same pits over and over. According to Dr. Phil, you have to face the emotion of the betrayal to heal. Why does betrayal cause such deep emotions?
We all have felt betrayed at one point in our lives, whether in childhood or adulthood. How does trust, betrayal lead us into pits? What is the common denominator? Well, my answer was a shock! It is FEAR!
First, we forget it is not flesh we war against. Eph 6:12: For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world-rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Second Fear comes into our minds and if we allow it the enemy runs with our fears, leading us into captivity and then we lose trust. Job was a Godly man and fear came upon him. Let’s look at Job: 3:25-26 for the thing which I greatly feared has come upon me, and that which I was afraid of has come unto me. Job was saying basically he did not think God would take care of him; the battle was in his mind. He did not speak evil. It came to his mind. Fear has come into my mind often, and it is a battle that leads me into each of my pits, I did not trust completely, fear swept in with all its endless possibilities, and due to lack of trust, I eventually became betrayed by fear, and fell face first into each of my pits. So did fear or the other person cause my betrayal or my pits?
Maybe that would explain the betrayers’ actions and emotions, as we are both thriving off one another’s fears. I am learning that one-person betrayal does not become another person’s action of accountability as fear was in the act of the betrayal. It is unfair of me to take all my hurts and betrayals and make the other person accountable or maybe even the victim. So in conclusion, on the journey or quest for answers I have found more than I bargained for, I found out fear has controlled me, just as it controls others and led me into betrayal and landed me in a pit. So it was not actually a person who put me in the pits, it was lack of control over fear and what fear does to our minds.
How do we fight fear then, when the enemy comes at you so fast, you have little time to react, my first thought was a scripture, I have come to love recently that Michael spoke in Jude 1:9 – Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee. Then in, Zechariah 3:2 And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?
So if I understand, these verses are saying, “Some battles are not ours to fight, but we have to have the wisdom to know how to send the battle away from our minds.” The simple words of “Let the Lord rebuke thee” takes the battle away from you and is given to our almighty God, who is our Victor. So Let the Lord rebuke the fear, and stay out of the pit.
Joshua 23:10 -One man of you shall chase a thousand: for the LORD your God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he hath promised you.
Deuteronomy 3:22-Ye shall not fear them: for the LORD your God he shall fight for you.
Deuteronomy 1:30-The LORD your God which goeth before you, he shall fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes;
Let God fight for you.
